There are four wires in the ceiling fan. Four wires have four distinctive colors that have separate functions. The four-wire colors are white, blue, green, and sometimes ceiling fans come with an additional red wire.
Here the white wire is neutral, blue for a ceiling fan light, green for earth, and black for the fan. Let’s see what red wire is for.
What’s the red wire for ceiling fan?
In general, if you need a separate connection of light and fan, you will need to connect the red wire with the black wire. Generally, a ceiling fan comes with three different colored wires. These are black, blue, green, and white-colored wires.
The white color wire is used to eliminate the risk of short circuits. While the green-colored wire is used to pass a high level of electricity to the earth. It is used for earthing. The blue one is used to connect the light and the ceiling fan.
And lastly, the black one is the primary electricity provider of the fan; it circulates electricity to the fan.
The red wire is extra wiring. You may not find it in every ceiling fan. This wiring will benefit you while you need two separate switches for light and the ceiling fan. It is not a fundamental wire.
If you don’t need separated switches, just use the black wire to connect electricity with the ceiling fan. You should connect the red wire with the black wire to connect your fan and light separately.
Why does my ceiling fan have a red wire?
The ceiling fan does not always have red wire. The red wire is needed when you need a separate switch for different functions. Red wire increases the ceiling fan functionality by adjusting the light and fan switch. Generally, most of the ceiling fans come with white, blue, black, and green wire.
Walk through this section to learn why your ceiling fan have a red wire –
Work as a Conductor:
Not all the ceiling fans have a red wire. Generally, a fan comes with four colored wires. From them, only a few ceiling fans have red wires. The Functionality of this red wire varies.
This red wire is known as hot wire, an ungrounded conductor of a particular switch. So, this switch can turn the fan on or the light as per the want.
Blue Wire’s replacement:
The blue wire helps the light to turn on separately. Sometimes the blue wire is used in case there is no red wire, and sometimes both the blue and red wire are used simultaneously.
Most of the time, the blue and red wires are placed to install an extra functional switch. You can replace the blue wire with a red wire interchangeably.
Increase Functionality:
Generally, the ceiling fan with a light attached needs extra wiring and extra circuits. To increase Functionality, you need to increase some circuits and wirings. That’s the reason behind the red wire inside of the ceiling fan.
However, if you don’t want to, you can leave the red wire untouched. Because you can still turn the light on by just attaching the black wire. The black wire passes all the electricity to your ceiling fan.
So, if you don’t get bothered with the extra switch, you may want to attach the light’s wires with the black wire. It will not harm the ceiling fan.
Why do I have an extra red wire for my ceiling fan?
Not all the ceiling fans have extra wiring. Some ceiling fans have some extra functionalities. Generally, with the extra money, you will get such ceiling fans which come with a light in the middle of the fan. Sometimes, you might not need to switch the light while switching the fan.
At that time, you will need to have an extra light switch. To control that light, you need to have an extra switch. With the extra switch, you will need to have an additional circuit and different wiring. This red wire helps you to switch the light and fan discreetly.
When you buy a relatively good fan and an adjusted light in it, you will get that red wire. Here, you have the red wire because your ceiling fan has extra Functionality.
Do I need to connect the red wire on a ceiling fan?
Your fans come with four fully functional wires. From them, the black one provides the ceiling fan with electricity. And the rest of the other wires, such as white, green, and blue, provide safety. An extra wire is needed when there will be an extra function along with your ceiling fan.
Generally, you do not need to have a red wire. You can directly connect your ceiling fan with the black wire and leave the red wire without connecting. It is up to you whether you want to use the extra function.
Thus, you don’t need to connect the red wire to a ceiling fan. The red wire is not fundamental wiring, so the fan will still run if you don’t connect the red wire. Make sure to properly attach the rest of the other wires.
What does the red wire connect to on a ceiling fan?
The red wire is connected to the black wire. Mainly, the black wire passes the electricity from the main circuit board to the circuit of the ceiling fan.
When you have a red wire in your ceiling fan, you want to connect it. Use the red wire and attach it with the black wire coming from the main circuit and adjust it with the ceiling fan board.
It will pass the electricity parallelly to the mainboard from a different switch. If you don’t use the red wire, the electricity connects with the ceiling fan in the series circuit. Which enables both the light and fan to turn on by using only one particular switch.
By connecting the black wire with the red one, you need two separate switches to turn your light and fan.
How to install a ceiling fan with a red wire?
The following steps will help you to install a ceiling fan with a red wire –
Cut All the Electrical Circuits:
Ensure you have cut all the electrical circuits from the circuit breaker for your safety. Just pull the circuit breaker upward to downward. You will have all the electricity off.
Separate both Household and Ceiling Fan Wires:
There are two different wirings. One is from your household, which circulates electricity. The other is your ceiling fan wires.
You will have four to five wires of different colors. Separate all the wires from a fan, and there will be similar sets of wires coming from your household; separate them as well.
Cut Some of the Outer Insulating Layer:
All wires come with an insulating layer. Cut the insulator using a cutter. A handy cutter is best when you cut the insulating layer. After separating all the insulators, you need to attach the fan’s black wire with the black wire of the household.
You need to take the black wire and then twist it to adjust it with the black wire of the electrical box. Similarly, you will do the same for all the wires from the fan to the electrical box. The electrical box has all the household wires.
Connect the red wire with the remaining electrical boxes exposed wire. The red and blue wire is similar. So, you can fix the red wire of the fan with the blue wire of the electrical box.
Remove the Back Cover Assemble the Fan Blades:
You might have a rear canopy that you need to open. Without opening it, you cannot attach the fan to the ceiling. So, open it and adjust it with the hook and attach all the fan blades to the fan.
All the screws should be placed where they belong, so don’t lose any of the screws.
Pull the ceiling fan up and face the motor down:
Now you need to hang the fan. Make sure that the fan is downward and the wirings are upward. So, pull it by holding the fan from the middle. Lift it up, and then adjust the fan with the pulley or the hook attached to your ceiling. And attach the fan tightly.
Turn the circuit breaker on:
After adjusting the fan’s proper position, turn on the circuit breaker. After turning the circuit breaker on, check all the switches to turn the light and fan on. If there are any fan running issues, you have to re-wire the fan.
Final Thoughts
A red wire is used to provide extra benefit to your ceiling fan. So that you can use it with a high level of flexibility. Though it is not mandatory to use, you can turn your fan on or off along with the light by attaching other wires properly. So, you don’t need to get bothered by this red wire.
